My name is Mac Brennan and that's the only thing I can remember about myself. Not why I woke up in a dumpster. Not why my right arm is as black as pitch and covered in glowing red tattoos, and certainly not why a vicious death cult is after me.

Actually, that last part isn't true. I know why the death cult is after me. It's because I saved that damned girl from them. I didn't know who she was at the time, but I'd have done it anyway. I just don't like it when girls get beat up, call me old fashioned.

Still, I can tell she's hiding something behind those devilish eyes, and if I want to find out what it is, I'll have to help her.

My name is Mac Brennan. I have no memory, and I'm a werewolf-hunting, hellfire-flinging version of Faust himself.

The Journey in Between
by Keith Foskett
PRICE: $0.99
Biographies & Memoirs
The first book from award winning writer Keith Foskett.
El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way, is the fabled path that weaves through French and Spanish countryside for 1,000 miles to its hallowed destination at Santiago de Compostella. Thousands attempt to walk its entirety each year: some succeed, many fail.
Keith Foskett thru-hiked the Camino to indulge his love for the outdoors and hiking but also, unintentionally, filled a void in his life which took him in a completely different direction. Along the way he made friends with fellow pilgrims from all over the world, all travelling for their own different reasons. He was assailed by new experiences and unexpected discoveries – from the pain of blisters and extremes of temperature to encountering kleptomaniacs, fake faith healers and being threatened with arrest in Spain for ‘not sleeping’.
This is the story of one man’s walk, but it speaks to all who see life itself as a journey and are alive to the revelations that an escape to nature can bring. Written with insight, observation and a healthy dose of humour.
As this book shows, it is rarely the start and the finish that count, but the journey in between.

Dark Bayou
by Nancy K Duplechain

Dark Fantasy
“The Spanish moss swayed eerily in the breeze that brought with it fat rain drops that plopped onto the water, rippling the reflection of the darkening sky. That was when we saw the cabin, far off in a corner on the west bank. It was as I had seen it in my dreams—rustic long-forgotten by the world, save for whatever occupied its malevolent little frame. And whatever it was, was nothing more than a black silhouette in a creaking rocking chair on the tiny porch. As I stared at the phantom rocker, it suddenly stopped in mid rock, picked up its head and turned to me, grinning, and started rocking away, never taking its yellow eyes off of me. And there, in the humid twilight of the swamp, a bitter chill washed over me, and my spine felt like ice.”

When Leigh Benoit returns home to Louisiana for the funeral of her brother and his wife, she becomes increasingly concerned about the welfare of her orphaned niece, Lyla. She is prompted by her grandmother, Clothilde, to move back to take care of her. Leigh has no desire to take on any responsibility, and being home again brings back painful memories. At the funeral, Leigh’s childhood friend, Detective Lucas Castille, tells her the mysterious details of the accident that killed her brother and his wife. Lucas’ young son has dreams of a Dark Man who wishes to harm Lyla. Leigh begins to have similar dreams. She struggles with her rational mind but vows to protect her niece. Soon, she finds out there is more to the story and more to her grandmother than she thought.

One Way

Mystery & Thriller
NYPD Detective Sam Archer is on his way home on a Sunday afternoon in New York City. He’s been out of the field for over three months due to a broken ankle and a serious bout of pneumonia from a previous case, but has just been given the all clear for a return to duty, starting tomorrow. Archer takes a seat on a bench in the Upper West Side, enjoying a cold drink and soaking up the last remaining sun of the day.

Then he sees something totally unexpected.

Two men are crossing the street in front of him, heading quickly towards a group climbing into a car. Both men are armed with pistols.

And all hell breaks loose.

Shouting a warning and racing to their aid, a ferocious gunfight erupts, shattering the peaceful afternoon. Archer and the group are forced to flee uptown in the strangers’ vehicle, their ambushers giving chase. With their tyres blown out and the car crashing, the group have no choice but to take refuge in a Harlem tenement block, situated in one of the most dangerous areas in the city. Their ambushers are right on their heels and seal off the building, preventing the NYPD from getting close as they start to arrive.

Archer and the others are trapped in the building with their attackers.

Hiding out with the group from the car in an apartment upstairs, Archer starts to piece together the situation. The people he’s with are US Marshals, protecting a witness, a seven year old girl. Clearly, someone out there is desperate to kill her.

But as they barricade themselves in and wait for back-up, none of them realise the full extent of the danger they are in.

Others are on their way to the building, ruthless trained killers who won’t leave until the girl is dead. As the scores of NYPD and Marshals on the street desperately try to figure out how they can get to their people inside, Archer and the Marshals must fight to stay alive against increasingly hopeless odds, running out of ammunition, chances and time.

Unarmed and totally unprepared, Archer is thrown back into the fray; either kill or be killed. As they encounter the enemy, suffer casualties and Archer learns who this child witness really is, two things become abundantly clear.

There’s only one way in or out of the building.

And it appears there’s only one way this can end.

American Legends: The Life of Marvin Gaye
by Charles River Editors
PRICE: $0.99
Biographies & Memoirs
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Among the many stars gathered by Berry Gordy’s Motown Records during the latter half of the 20th century, one of the most famous and successful was Marvin Gaye, even though the rigidity of the studio’s operating procedures constantly collided with his capacity for stubbornness and insistence that he be given the independence to pursue his own artistic vision. Of course, it’s easy to see it from both sides; despite the ceaseless thread of masterpieces emerging from Motown studio artists (many of them performed and recorded by Gaye), it might also be said in his defense that as part of the record company’s mission statement, Motown operated in a state of near artistic lockdown where creative input by the artist was concerned. Unapologetically hit-driven, Motown measured success almost solely by chart rankings and units sold, and it naturally avoided any alteration of old formulas that produced results, all of which made Motown the epitome of an efficiently-run music entertainment provider. As Marvin Gaye learned, however, it was not the place in which to nourish his thirst for creative freedom and innovation. To further serve the Motown founder’s vision, even the associated “charm school” of Maxine Powell was designed to train the singers to carry themselves well in any public situation, in accordance with the Motown mission. Gaye considered such a confining regimen to be worse than useless, and he showed no hesitation in saying so. He once complained, “I am not going to be dictated to by fans, certainly. I am dictated enough to by my record company to last me a million years.”

In the construct of Berry Gordy’s vision, only the most successful Motown artists could protest or plead for creative expansion, and concessions were far from guaranteed. Motown made the careers of many famous artists, and they subsequently became household names across America, but it very often served as a studio from which many would move on and branch out once their credentials were established. In dealing with the rare artist and personality of Marvin Gaye, however, Motown met the one individual who could resist and even reshape the studio’s model without leaving, at least until very late in his career.

That said, while What’s Going On bucked the trend so far as Motown was concerned, it can also be said that Gaye himself shaped Motown’s signature sound with hits like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Of course, Gaye also influenced the music industry as a whole, particularly the R&B genre. Midnight Love and the hit song “Sexual Healing” are classics that remain instantly recognizable today, and the sound can certainly be heard in the works of subsequent artists.

Gaye’s recording career was full of turbulence, and so was his personal life, a point tragically driven home by the fact that he was shot and killed by his own father the day before his 45th birthday. Before his untimely death, Gaye battled all kinds of demons, including drug abuse and depression, and he had stormy relationships with many of the most important figures in his life. If anything, the chaos surrounding him makes his incredible musical career all the more amazing.

American Legends: The Life of Marvin Gaye looks at the life and career of one of America’s most famous musicians.
