Special Guest: Elle Cooper

The Guilty Pleasures Gossip Club

What a beautiful winter morning in Silver Hollow, a quaint village in southeast Michigan. Chilly but with bright sunshine. Park your car and walk across the street to the row of brick shops on Main Street – coffee is brewing at Fresh Grounds, and the scent of fruit-and-streusel topped muffins and other tasty baked goods waft over the customers’ heads. Instead of standing in line, head past the crowd to the adjoining shop, through the open French doors. Welcome to the Cat’s Cradle, a children’s bookstore. Come on in!

I’m Elle Cooper, proud owner along with my husband, and we’ve been in business here for almost a decade. My friends and I are finally taking the opportunity for a Guilty Pleasures Gossip Club meeting. We rarely have a chance to get together lately given the busy holiday season. Avoid the saucer chair, it’s tricky. Kids mostly sit on that. But there’s a cozy circle of seats near the bay window. Help yourself to coffee, and there’s the cream and sugar – oh, and a chocolate chip scone.

Mary Kate Thompson baked them this morning, she’s the strawberry blond. She’s less busy, given her pregnancy and the doctor’s orders to let her staff do most of the heavy work. And sitting over there is Sasha Silverman, who looks exhausted. She recently helped her mom with the village’s Festival of Lights parade, and they happened to stumble across the parade’s mascot, dressed in a bear costume, dead of a heart attack. It’s possible he may have been electrocuted, given the blackened skin on his hands and chest. Poor Cal Bloom, who was recently re-elected Mayor by a landslide, so full of life and popular. Seems crazy to think he’d be murdered, right? Besides, who would dare kill Santa Bear?

How’s the muffin, by the way? Mary Kate has to avoid caffeine, so she’s drinking herbal tea. I prefer chai, spicy and hot, while Sasha is on her second Mint Mocha. The Guilty Pleasures Gossip Club is now open for the latest news and views circulating the village. One of our sources is Sasha’s sister, Maddie, who gets her gossip from policeman Digger Sykes, an old friend from high school. Silver Hollow has such a small force, and with the string of murders lately, the chief has called in for help once again from the Dexter County Sheriff’s office.

Sasha said that Maddie told her that Digger believes Cal Bloom’s wife is a suspect. That makes sense, since the cops are always looking into spouses first, right? And what about the local farmer who ran against him in the election? He wasn’t happy about losing so badly. And then there’s the mayor’s daughter, who also might benefit from her dad’s death. Cal Bloom had a booming laugh and acted friendly with whoever he met around Silver Hollow, but – everyone has secrets. And we’re about to dig around and discover the truth.

Oops, I’ve got to help some early customers who just walked in. Sorry, this meeting might have to be postponed until later . . . .

This holiday season, teddy bear shop manager Sasha Silverman must solve the slaying of Santa Bear . . .
Sasha and her sister Maddie are thrilled that the Silver Bear Shop and Factory has won the Teddy Bear Keepsake Contest, which means they get to produce a holiday specialty toy, a wizard bear named “Beary Potter.” Promising to be just as magical is Silver Hollow’s annual tree-lighting ceremony and village parade. Only one hitch: the parade’s mascot, Santa Bear—played by Mayor Cal Bloom—is missing.
After a frantic search among the floats, Bloom is found dead. When the outfit is removed, it’s clear the mayor’s been electrocuted. Who zapped hizzoner and then stuffed him into his Santa Bear suit? While the police investigate the grisly crime, Sasha attempts to track down the murderer herself, with some help from the Guilty Pleasures Gossip Club. Can they wrap up this case in time for Christmas—or will Sasha meet her own shocking end?
