Bound for Murder by Victoria Gilbert

A Few Words from Kurt Kendrick

Hello, my name is Kurt Edward Kendrick. But since I am among friends, I must admit that I adopted that name later in life. My birth name was Karl Lee Kloss.  I changed it when I altered the trajectory of my life from runaway and small-time drug dealer to entrepreneur.

For many years now I’ve been an art collector and dealer. I buy and sell high-end paintings and sculptures, and sometimes handle antiques. I own an art gallery and townhouse in Georgetown, D.C., as well as a gallery space at the top of a skyscraper in New York City, and a historic home called Highview. My home is located just outside of Taylorsford, Virginia.

Although not everyone is aware of this, I chose Taylorsford for a very specific reason. As Karl Kloss, I actually lived there when I was young – first at an orphanage that has since been demolished, and then with my foster father, Paul Dassin. But I was always a rebel, and despite Paul’s best efforts, tended to get in trouble. When I got into drug dealing in my late teens, I decided to set off on my own, mostly because I wanted my independence, but also because I wanted to protect Paul from any repercussions from my illegal activities.

I didn’t return to Taylorsford until much later, after I’d built a business empire that has made me quite wealthy. Whether all my activities are strictly legal… Well, I think I will take the fifth on that. But I do have my scruples, and have even assisted the authorities on a few occasions. Whatever my faults, I don’t support the sale of forgeries or anyone harming innocents.

Now that I’ve lived at Highview for several years, I’ve also had the opportunity to connect with people I consider family – Paul Dassin’s niece, Fiona Muir, and her son, Richard. To be honest, although we only met recently, I’ve kept tabs on them all my life. I even helped Richard’s dance career with some grants and other financial assistance over the years, albeit anonymously. In addition, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Amy Webber, Richard’s fiancé, and many people in her circle of family and friends. Amy is also the niece of Lydia Talbot, who was the wife of my best friend, the painter Andrew Talbot. Sadly, Andrew died in a tragic accident when he was only thirty-two. That was a great blow to me, as he was one of the few people I have truly loved in my seventy-three years of life. Honoring his memory, I will continue to protect his family, even if Lydia and I haven’t always been cordial, much less friends.

But enough about me. I’d like to know more about you. Let’s pretend we’re sitting in my beautiful living room, surrounded by fine paintings and sculptures, drinking an excellent brandy, and discussing important things, like art. Who are your favorite artists, or if you prefer, your favorite style of art? Please feel free to comment below.

Blue Ridge library director Amy Webber learns it wasn’t all peace and love among the “flower children” when a corpse is unearthed on the grounds of a 1960s commune.
Taylorsford Public Library director Amy Webber’s friend “Sunny” Fields is running for mayor. But nothing puts a damper on a campaign like an actual skeleton in a candidate’s closet. Sunny’s grandparents ran a commune back in the 1960s on their organic farm. But these former hippies face criminal charges when human remains are found in their fields–and a forensic examination reveals that the death was neither natural nor accidental.
With Sunny’s mayoral hopes fading, Amy sets her wedding plans aside, says “not yet” to the dress, and uses her research skills to clear her best friend’s family. Any of the now-elderly commune members could have been the culprit. As former hippies perish one by one, Amy and her friends Richard, Aunt Lydia, and Hugh Chen pursue every lead. But if Amy can’t find whoever killed these “flower children,” someone may soon be placing flowers on her grave.

Wait! Stop! Are you leaving the same old comment on all the blog pages? Try switching things up a bit. I love reading your comments, but if its the same thing each time... it feels like spam. And NO ONE likes spam...
