“Never waste good rum on a bad night.” – Teddy Lawless, February 1926.
There are many bad nights ahead for Teddy. Shortly after she arrives at the newly opened Vinoy Hotel in Saint Petersburg, she comes face to face with her ex-fiancé, Ansel Stevens, in the dining room. Cue the slap that was thirty years in the making. Unfortunately, her ex-fiancé dies during a yacht race shortly thereafter. Conclusion of the authorities: poison. His family closes ranks, leaving Teddy as the prime suspect. Worse, Teddy’s hair comb is found on the deck of Ansel’s boat, leading to her swift arrest.
Can Cornelia Pettijohn and Uncle Percival save fun-loving Teddy before she goes from the grand hotel to the big house?

 Expression Through Perfume
By Evelyn Stevens

Gone is the Victorian era of Eau de Cologne and lavender oil. The 1920s offers a panoply of scents to women of all incomes and personalities.
The most popular scent today is Guerlain’s Shalimar. It’s been all the rage since it was presented at Paris’s International Art Deco Show in 1925. Vanilla blended with bergamot, lemon, sandalwood, and night-blooming jasmine create a sweet, exotic scent. Naturally, my sister Violet wears it. It suits her personality, but between it and her Clara Bow curls, she’s a kernel in a field of wheat.
Chanel Number 5 has a scent that is different on every woman, granting individuality. It contains jasmine, vanilla, and sandalwood like Shalimar, but blends it with rose in a bouquet with an aromatic quality no other scent on the market has. It is bold, and well-suited to career women like my friend Bobby Arbuckle, society writer for the Evening Standard.
Theodora Lawless rammed into me on the veranda at the Vinoy Hotel, which was when I learned that she wears Lily of the Valley. Trust her to favor a poisonous flower! She has the taste, at least, of wearing the high-quality perfume, perhaps Yardley or Mura rather than Colgate. Of course, in the case of the well-named Miss Lawless, there is an additional note of rum in the bouquet.
As for myself, I prefer a less common perfume. Tabac Blond by Caron, my favorite, has the scent of tobacco flavored with only a touch of vanilla. I began wearing Tabac during my time at college, where all girls far from their fathers learn to smoke. My dearest Arthur gave me Shalimar for Valentine’s Day. I understand why; he is a horticulturist who associates flowers with women. But tobacco is a plant, too, and I prefer Tabac Blond because flowers simper, and I am not a simpering woman.
I advise that you choose a perfume that suits your personality. Don’t wear a scent simply because it is popular, or because someone else gave it to you. Fresh and bold, sultry and spicy, or even those sweet blossoms—be sure it expresses something true of yourself. It will convey your personality on a deeper, more subtle level than your hairstyle.
