Weeding out killers wasn’t part of the job description . . .
Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast, is excited to participate in an event to raise awareness for the plight of struggling veterans in their Northern California coastal community. Local wineries are sponsoring tastings, and to prepare for a culinary competition, professional chefs will forage for wild edible greens. Kelly plans to come along, despite a warning to beware of poachers, who have been stealing the highly valued succulent Dudleya farinosa. The senior sleuths who call themselves the Silver Sentinels join forces with environmental activists known as the Succulent Saviors to thwart the poaching operation. When a consultant for the sale of a local winery is murdered, the poachers are suspected—but so is a wine merchant, Kelly’s friend Phil. As Kelly and the Silver Sentinels attempt to root out the real killer, what she digs up might just put her permanently underground . . .

The Silver Sentinels
by Janet Finsilver

Hi! My name is Kelly Jackson, and I was the lucky one chosen to be the main character in Janet Finsilver’s mystery series. The first book, Murder at Redwood Cove, uses the name of the wonderful town I now live in. It has a village-like atmosphere and is situated on the northern coast of California.

The series begins when I fly to the town to take over Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast after the manager has a fatal fall from a seaside cliff which is deemed an accident. I wasn’t at the inn long before I heard someone say, “It was murder, and you know it.” That led me to meet the Silver Sentinels, a crime-solving group of seniors and friends of the deceased innkeeper.

The group is comprised of five people. One is Henry Winthrop who prefers to be called the Professor. This moniker comes as a result of his many years spent as a university professor. Mary Rutledge, baker extraordinaire, Gertrude “Gertie” Plumber, a retired teacher, and Ivan and Rudy Dubinsky, brothers from Russia, round out the crew. The name of the group is derived from their silver-colored hair and their desire to watch over their community. When they asked for my help in investigating their friend’s death, I agreed. Little did I know this was the beginning of a new chapter in my life as an amateur sleuth.

I got to meet Gertie’s son, Stephen, in the second book, Murder at the Mansion. He travels around the country with his team of two beagles that are trained to find bedbugs and termites. Gertie invited me to join the group for a dinner party for her son. I had a great time and learned about her Pennsylvania Dutch background.

Her ancestry matches her character perfectly. She is a no-nonsense kind of person. Deputy Sheriff Stanton, who I met while investigating in the first book, had Gertie for his fifth-grade teacher. He said there was no messing around in her class!

Mary Rutledge keeps the group supplied with excellent sweets for our meetings. I hope to convince her to put together a few recipes I can share with my guests who stay at the inn. In Murder at the Fortune Teller’s Table I got to go inside her house, and she showed me her extensive collection of porcelain figures. It turns out she acquires many of them through online auctions. I enjoyed watching her bid on an object. She was thrilled when she got it!

The Professor’s son, Timothy, and his friend Clarence, spend time with us for a while in Murder at the Mushroom Festival. A pie party was planned, and I received an invitation. I had an opportunity to see the Professor’s home. Think books and more books! The shelves were lined with dozens of them. The place had a relaxed, comfortable feeling about it. The leather chairs facing the crackling fire in the fireplace invited you to sit and read for a while.

You wouldn’t know the two Russian brothers, Ivan and Rudy Doblinsky, were related as they differ markedly from each other in appearance and personality. Rudy has a slender frame, and his hair is always neatly trimmed. Ivan towers over him, and his unruly hair has a mind of its own. In Murder at the Marina, they find themselves in a difficult situation. As we all work to help them out, we learn about how they came from Russia to the United States.

The Silver Sentinels and I work together to solve more than one crime in Murder in the Wine Country. A man is killed, a friend is arrested, and plant poachers are posing a threat to the community.

I hope you’ve enjoyed meeting me and the crime-solving seniors, the Silver Sentinels.
Please join us on our investigations!
