Sprinkles of Suspicion

Sprinkles of Suspicion
by Kim Davis

I’ve never been so spitting mad at my son as I was yesterday when he told me he’d hired someone to become my live-in caretaker. Just because I broke my arm after falling down the stairs (I will never confess that it happened because I was sexting that new silver fox ballroom dance instructor at the senior center) doesn’t mean I’m not capable of taking care of myself. After all, I’m Matilda (but please call me Tillie) Skyler, the matriarch of our prestigious family and the head of several philanthropic committees. If word got out that I needed a caretaker I’d lose my valued position in Newport Beach society.

So here I am, staring at this young woman, Emory, who looks like she’d rather be anywhere but here. I don’t blame her. Her mother, an old schoolmate of my son, dragged her to my house and then left Emory here to fend for herself. Please don’t think that I’m a cranky old woman but while my son and Emory’s mother were here, I wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of thinking I was happy with this arrangement. And then before my son left, he had the audacity to read off an entire list of all the things I could and couldn’t eat or drink and what my daily routine was supposed to be. Of all the nerve! But finally it’s just the two of us alone, along with her well-behaved dog, Piper.

Now I’ll let you in on a little secret, but please don’t tell my son. Just because I don’t need a caretaker doesn’t mean I’m not thrilled to have Emory here. She’s become quite famous, or maybe you’d call it infamous, lately and I might just have a real life murderer living in my pool house and cooking for me. Emory swears she didn’t kill her best friend after she caught that tramp having an affair with her husband. She also says she’s trying to find out who did. Either way it means I’ll have a lot of new gossip to share with my bridge gals and committee members. Come to think of it, I might even be able to help Emory investigate and keep her out of the slammer! Won’t that be fun?!

Well it’s five o’clock somewhere and no matter what my son’s directives are, it’s time to fix a gimlet or three. I’ll show Emory around her new home while we imbibe and I’ll find out the inside scoop on the murder then let you know.

One glass of cheap California chardonnay cost Emory Gosser Martinez her husband, her job, and her best friend. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of her troubles.

Distraught after discovering the betrayal by her husband and best friend, Tori, cupcake caterer Emory Martinez allows her temper to flare. Several people witness her very public altercation with her ex-friend. To make matters worse, Tori exacts her revenge by posting a fake photo of Emory in a compromising situation, which goes viral on social media. When Tori is found murdered, all signs point to Emory being the prime suspect.

With the police investigation focused on gathering evidence to convict her, Emory must prove her innocence while whipping up batches of cupcakes and buttercream. Delving into the past of her murdered ex-friend, she finds other people had reasons to want Tori dead, including Emory’s own husband. Can she find the killer, or will the clues sprinkled around the investigation point the police back to her?
