Guest Post:
Real-life Ava and Jolie

I met Jodi Rath, author of The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series, when we taught high school English together. I immediately recognized a fellow sarcastic snark-wit. She had me struggling to maintain “professional” composure at more than one staff meeting. She was and is a great teacher, though, and has a passion for education.
Then, she became a professional writer, and I started reading her books. My favorite part of The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series is the relationship between the main character, Jolie, and her BFF, Ava. They open a restaurant called Cast Iron Creations together. Jolie creates the recipes and does the cooking, while Ava runs the front of the house. Their relationship is both hilarious and heartwarming. Jolie keeps her thoughts to herself more often (but not always), and Ava tends to say what she thinks ALL THE TIME. They bicker and tease each other, but they are always there for one another in the end.
When I started editing the series for Jodi, our friendship took on a whole new layer. We have lively grammatical debates (can you imagine two English teachers going head-to-head?) and bicker about plot points. We stress out about deadlines and vent about setbacks to one another.  I don’t remember which one of us noticed first, but it is definitely true: Jodi and I are the real-life Jolie and Ava. Sometimes we trade places, but in general, I am Ava and Jodi is Jolie. We both have wild curly hair like Jolie and Ava. (I WISH I had Ava’s curves, but I don’t.) We have helped one another through some tough moments. I can count on her and she can count on me. Like Jolie and Ava working together to create delicious food at their restaurant, Jodi and I work together to make a polished book. (She cooks it; I put it on a tray!)
Then, if things weren’t nutty enough, Jodi asked me to co-write book four of the series with her. I was delighted but intimidated. Writing a mystery is hard work! There are so many plotlines, clues, and reveals to keep track of. I flipped through copies of the first three books, taking notes to make sure I had every little detail correct. If anyone thinks writing is easy, I can personally attest that it is not!
My absolute favorite thing to write in this book was dialogue, particularly dialogue between Jolie and Ava. I feel like it sounds authentic because it is actually something that I might say to Jodi, or she might say to me, in some alternate universe, where we run a restaurant together!
Cast Iron Stake Through the Heart is book four in The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery series by Jodi Rath and me—Rebecca Grubb. It was an adventure to write and an adventure to read!

  6. I like that the book cover has 3 black cats plus the two main characters are patterned after the authors. Is there really a town in Ohio named Leavensport? I like the map drawn of the town on Jodi's website.

    1. Every book in the series has a different cat on it. My hubby and I have rescued 19 cats in 18 years (really, they rescued us!) and we've adopted many older cats b/c not many people want to do that--so we've lost many cats too. We have nine cats inside and since we never adopt kittens--in May of 2019 we adopted three little girl black cats (they had trouble with adoption b/c they were black and b/c the girls were so close and no one wanted three)--so we did something we'd never done--took all three kittens in and it has been wonderful. In the book, Ava finds and takes them--their names in the books are the real names--and many you see have passed away after living a wonderfully happy life with us--they live on in the books! These three girls are a year now and they are Lily Rose Rath, Luna Bella Rath, and Lulu Bean Rath. They are spoiled and rotten and wonderful in every way possible :--)

    2. Thank you so much for having us here today. I LOVED this blog that Rebecca wrote--it's one of my favorite blogs EVER! As much as I harp on her and tease her, she is not only my BFF, but I'm an only child--like Jolie, and Rebecca has a twin--Ava has a sister--Rebecca is like my sister in every way. We argue, bicker, we've had a knock out, drag out once, and then we cried b/c of how much we love each other--so that makes us stronger than blood IMHO! Thanks all!
