As Stella Wright’s Nantucket candle store thrives, her knack for solving mysteries burns equally bright—especially when a Halloween haunted house uncovers evidence of a centuries-old murder . . .

When Stella’s friend inherits a creaky, abandoned home in Nantucket, she knows it’s the perfect setting for the town’s annual Halloween fundraiser. A deserted, boarded-up building on the property—once used as a candle-making shop—adds to the creepy ambiance. But as Stella explores the shack’s dilapidated walls, she discovers a terrible secret: the skeleton of a Quaker woman, wrapped in blood-soaked clothing and hidden deep within a stone hearth . . .

While police investigate, Stella wastes no time asking for help from friends with long ties to Nantucket’s intricate history. The key to the murder may lie within a scorching 18th century love triangle that pit two best friends against one another over a dubious man. But before the case is solved, another life will be claimed—leaving Stella to wonder who in Nantucket is friend, and who is foe . . .

News From The Wick & Flame Candle Store

Thanks so much for having me today.  By way of introduction, I’m Stella Wright, owner of the Wick & Flame candle shop on Nantucket Island.  I was born and raised in this fine town, and am grateful that I have been able to turn my passion in candle-making into a business, in a town that is filled with my family and friends.

Since Halloween is around the corner, I thought I’d talk a bit about the candles I’ve made for my store this season.  If you stop into my shop these days, you’ll find it filled with orange and black candles I’ve made every night over the last week. For fun, I have come up with some unique scents for the holiday, like Eyeball of Newt and Spider Soup for those who are really into the spirit of the season. As you might imagine, Halloween is one of the highlights of the year at the Wick & Flame. I light many candles to turn up the spooky vibe, albeit one that includes jack-o’-lantern candles scented with pumpkin spice and glow-in-the-dark ghost candles. This year, I’ve also added the Tinker Special to my product line. It is a black cat, inspired by my feline friend, Tinker, wearing a jaunty orange witch’s hat from which the wick extends.

Some of you might also know that I’ve solved a couple of murder cases.  It’s funny what you can do when life throws an unexpected challenge your way, but I’ve found that I love to solve a good mystery.  I’ve also found that my candle making skills have come in handy.  Who would have ever expected that a good sense of smell and a creative mind are helpful skills in solving a mystery?  In fact, I stumbled upon my latest case after finding an old sign for a candle store that was run by a young woman like me, but out of her home.  One thing led to another, and some of the town’s “skeleton’s in the closet” came back to haunt us.  I’ve discovered a past to my hometown that includes amazing women who ran the island while their husbands were away at sea, and how friendships from the past mirror friendships we rely on today.

Fall is a great time of year to visit Nantucket.  If you happen to find yourself here, please stop by the Wick & Flame.  I’ll make sure you find something you like, and I’ll be happy to put you in touch with one of the town’s best ghost tour operators, Brenda Worthington, so you can really soak in the haunted past of town.

Stay well!

About Christin Brecher

Christin Brecher was born and raised in NYC, where her family and many childhood friends still reside. As such, she feels she is as much of a small-town girl as any. The idea to write the Nantucket Candle Maker series sprang from her life-long connection to the small island off the coast of Massachusetts. Spending summers there as a child, Christin read from her family’s library of mystery novels, after which she began to imagine stories inspired by the island’s whaling heyday, its notoriously foggy nights, and during long bike rides to the beach. After many years in marketing for the publishing industry, followed by years raising her children, Murder’s No Votive Confidence is Christin’s debut novel.
