Pippin Lane Hawthorne 

Names are a big deal to a kid. Imagine the first day of school, every single year, when the teacher takes roll for the first time. “Peregrin Hawthorne?”

I remember sinking down in my chair and covering my face with my hand. Why, oh why had my parents named me Peregrin?

Well, actually, I know why. It’s because my dad, Leo, was a major Tolkien fan. He named my twin brother Grey, after Gandalf. My brother and I thanked our lucky stars over and over that our dad hadn’t named us Frodo or Bilbo, Arwen or Galadriel. My dad started calling me Pippin, which is what Peregrin Took goes by in the Tolkien books. Why he didn’t just name me Pippin is a question I have, but one that will never be answered.

Because, you see, Leo Hawthorne, my dad, walked out on Grey and me 20 years ago.

Imagine our surprise, then, when our grandparents both died and we found out that my parents’ house in Devil’s Cove—the one where we’d spent our first 9 years—still belonged to us.

Now that we’re back there, it seems that everyone knows my name. Everywhere I go, someone says, “Pippin, you’re the spitting image of your mother!” or “Pippin, we’re keeping tabs on what you and Grey are doing with your folks’ old house,” or “Good to see you here, Pippin.”

Maybe Grey and I are meant to be back in Devil’s Cove. People certainly seem to want us here. So, we’ll renovate the old house and see what unfolds for us there.
