The Darkened Land
The Seven Towers Book 1
by Larry Paris
Genre: Epic Christian Allegorical Fantasy

Separated from the world of darkness by a bottomless chasm lie the stones of light. The King has built a bridge from that world to His kingdom across the chasm to give people access once again to the stones. He has established seven cities of light and seven towers as beacons to The Darkened Land.

Seven Towers

Seven cities of might
Seven towers of light
In the land of was
And will be

Lachlaniel’s world is a world of complete darkness, but across the Godwin River there are stones of light. When he sees the light for the first time and beholds the wonder of the stones, Lachlaniel sets out for the Godwin accompanied by Ewald, the woodsman. But creatures of darkness, who hate the light and the stones, pursue them. Guided by Kesniel and protected by Velius they reach the Great City Agapay and the Bridge. The stones lie just beyond, but the quest has aroused The Great Evil.  Nameless and powerful he bends his might to crush the city and put an end to the light in his dominion. The city is now in peril.

“Remember your city. Remember those you love. Remember your families. Remember your King, and fight with might and main this day. Remember also ‘the horse is prepared for battle, but the victory is the King’s’.” He stepped down and moved towards the massive doors. “Arm yourselves!” The doors swung open at his touch. “For King and country!!” he shouted and moved through the doors.

The Darkened Land is epic fantasy at its very best...

If you love Tolkien, you won't want to miss this premier novel by Larry Paris”

Their conversation ended just as they left the trees. The silence resumed, a deathly stillness that filled the land. Their hands went to their sword hilts, and their eyes scanned the land for any sign of the enemy or any hint of an ambush. Gradually, they became aware of a drone like a hive of bees, but still nothing in the land moved. The sound grew from barely perceptible to be so loud that conversation was impossible. Then they all saw it. There was a dark spot in the sky above the horizon. They stopped dead in their tracks. Whatever it was, it was huge. As the shape became discernable, the color drained from Lachlaniel’s face and the sword fell from his hand. No head could be seen, but the creature had two huge claws reaching forward and six legs dangling in the air beneath its body. Its wings were only a blur. Trailing behind was a long tail with a hook-like stinger. Ewald, too, was overcome. His ax also lay on the ground, and his face was masked in horror. He couldn’t take his eyes off the creature. Kesniel was filled with terror too, but he kept his head. He shed his pack reached behind him to a buckler shield that had appeared on his back. With shield and sword in hand he prepared to stand his ground.

The monster hovered just in front of them. It's tail curved over its head, ready to strike. Lachlaniel fell to the ground as though lifeless. Kesniel held his shield and sword at the ready. As Ewald turned to flee, the creature pounced. One claw knocked Kesniel down, the other engulfed Ewald lifting him into the air. Lachlaniel lay unmoving caged by the legs of the gigantic creature. The tail moved swiftly to finish off Kesniel as he lay dazed but unhurt by the side of the road. Kesniel lifted his sword feebly, but it was enough to deflect the stinger which struck the ground. Quills rose up on the back of the creature and several flew in Kesniel’s direction. He raised his small shield which took several hits, but two of the quills found their marks. Kesniel couldn’t stop to pull them from his shoulder and thigh. As he got to his feet, his own cries of pain mingled in the air with those of Ewald, who was still being crushed in the grip of the claw, and Lachlaniel’s low moans beneath the beast. Kesniel could feel the poison entering his veins and knew that unconsciousness was not far away. He moved to strike at the claw that held Ewald while he still had strength, but that hideous tail struck out again knocking the shield out of his hand and sending him sprawling. As consciousness fled from him, he saw a brilliant light and then darkness closed in.

  1. I am entirely new to "Epic Christian Allegorical Fantasy". Sounds inviting, complex and encompassing.

    1. Christian allegory is like Pilgrim's Progress. Christian epic fantasy is like The Chronicles of Narnia. I have tried to make a Christian allegory that is a little more subtle than Pilgrim's Progress so that it can be read as an epic fantasy. If you're familiar with Christian imagery you should easily pick up on it, but the book should still be able to be read as just a good fantasy. I'm working on the second of the series now. It could be ready by the end of the year if the funds are available to do the editing, but it may be spring of next year.
