In The Glass House, the first book in the PIP Inc. Mysteries series Pat Pirard, recently downsized Santa Cruz Law Librarian, needed to find a new job in a hurry. She printed business cards announcing she was Private Investigator Pat and crossed her fingers, hoping she could earn enough money working for attorneys as a PI to survive.

Pat’s first investigation went well, so she’s excited when she gets a call from an estate attorney who offers her a second job. The attorney tells Pat his client died at a funeral and he needs help sorting out who is entitled to inherit her estate.

Pat quickly discovers the dead woman’s past is as complicated as her estate. And when an autopsy indicates she had two deadly toxins in her body when she died, Pat’s new case becomes not only complicated, but dangerous.

A Word from PI Pat

Hi, I’m Private Investigator Pat.

Yes, I think I can officially call myself a private investigator. I know having business cards proclaiming my job title doesn’t make me one and I don’t have a license in the state of California where I live and work, but as long as California State Bar recognized attorneys keep hiring me, my work is legal and I don’t have to go through the annoying three-year process of understudying with a licensed PI to become one myself. Besides, my cases are coming too quickly for me to take a time-out.

Not that long ago, I thought I was going to be lonely and penniless. My long-time boyfriend dumped me and I was downsized out of my Santa Cruz County Law Librarian job right before my thirty-fifth birthday. All I could be thankful for was that strawberry blonde is my natural hair color because I couldn’t have afforded to have it colored. I fretted that I might have to take up couch surfing or accept a boring job to keep a roof over my head to keep Dot, my Dalmatian, in cheap kibble, and my cat, Lord Peter Wimsey (yes, he is named after Dorothy Sayer’s character) in off-brand cat food.

Was I ever mistaken about what my future held. Life has taken a turn for the better, so much so that if you look closely, you’ll discover me dressed in a bright yellow sundress; wearing three silver bracelets on one arm, two gold ones on my other arm, and a necklace with a large tiger-patterned pendant; feet shod in my favorite mango-colored sandals, doing a happy dance.

In just a few short months, I’ve become CEO of my own company, PIP. Inc., settled a complicated inheritance, proved that a son who went missing before he was two has returned, learned all about exotic poisons, and solved two murders. Best of all, it would seem I’m just getting started. I’m developing a reputation and I’ve already been offered a third case.

Because of the first murder, I’ve met someone special, too. He could be the man I spend the rest of my life with―what a scary and wonderful thought.  Dot adores him, and she is an excellent judge of character. My cat is warming to him, too, after they got off to a rocky start due to a foot-on-tail-in-the-dark incident.

My best friend, Syda Gonzales, is still trying to write a noir mystery. She keeps changing her protagonist’s name; so far he’s been everyone from Rowdy Dick to Humphrey Bogatti. She’s a wonderful, supportive friend―she even gave me a set of lock picking tools to celebrate my becoming an amateur PI―and she’s game for any adventure. I don’t know how to tell her that I don’t think she’s destined to be a writer, but I’m hoping that if I keep her busy enough helping me out with the disguises and fake identities I come up with during investigations, I won’t have to.

About Nancy Lynn Jarvis

Nancy Lynn Jarvis left the real estate profession after she started having so much fun writing the Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries series that she let her license lapse. She’s enjoyed writing about Regan and her husband, Tom, but decided it was time to do a new series.

PIP Inc. introduces protagonist downsized law librarian and not-quite-licensed Private Investigator Pat Pirard. “The Funeral Murder” is the second book in the series.

After earning a BA in behavioral science from San Jose State University, Nancy worked in the advertising department of the San Jose Mercury News. A move to Santa Cruz meant a new job as a librarian and later a stint as the business manager for Shakespeare/Santa Cruz at UCSC.

Currently, she’s enjoying being a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and Santa Cruz Women of Mystery.

  1. Thanks for letting Pat bring you up to date on her life. Six weeks after the CZU fire in California forced me out of my house, I enjoyed being in Pat's world for a few minutes,
