Life is looking up for magazine crafts editor Anastasia Pollack. Newly engaged, she and photojournalist fiancé Zack Barnes are on a winter cruise with her family, compliments of a Christmas gift from her half-brother-in-law. Son Alex’s girlfriend and her father have also joined them. Shortly after boarding the ship, Anastasia is approached by a man with an unusual interest in her engagement ring. When she tells Zack of her encounter, he suggests the man might be a jewel thief scouting for his next mark. But before Anastasia can point the man out to Zack, the would-be thief approaches him, revealing his true motivation. Long-buried secrets now threaten the well-being of everyone Anastasia holds dear. And that’s before the first dead body turns up.

 Craft projects included.

A Word from the main character...

Anastasia Pollack, The Reluctant Amateur Sleuth

My name is Anastasia Pollack. Before author Lois Winston entered my life, I had few complaints. I had a good marriage (or so I thought), an enjoyable career as the crafts editor at a women’s magazine, and two great kids. My only real complaint was that my communist mother-in-law had moved in with us while she recuperated from a hit-and-run, but Karl, my husband, had assured me her stay would be as short as possible.

Enter my sadistic author Lois Winston. She decided that Karl wasn’t the loving husband I thought he was and killed him off at a roulette wheel in Las Vegas before the first book of the series she named after me even opens. I thought he was at a sales meeting in Harrisburg, PA.

As if that weren’t bad enough, Lois decided Karl was a closet gambler who, unbeknownst to me, blew through all our savings and accrued enough debt to support a small Third World nation. He also owed fifty G’s to a loan shark. (In case you’ve never had any dealings with loan sharks, they want their money, no matter what. Death is no excuse.)

So much for my great life! But Lois wasn’t done with me yet. When I returned to work after Karl’s funeral, Lois had another surprise waiting for me—a dead body glued to my office chair! As it turned out, it was only the first of what has become a continuing progression of dead bodies.

So here we are, nine books and three novellas into the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery Series and Lois has not let up. I once asked her why she picks on me. She said it’s because I and my assorted family members, friends, and pets make readers laugh. Laughing is good. I get it—especially now with everything that’s going on in the world. Who doesn’t need to release more endorphins? She reminds me that readers aren’t laughing at me; they’re laughing with me as I deal with that communist mother-in-law, my multi-married mother, my Shakespeare-quoting parrot, and a host of other characters with whom Lois has seen fit to populate my world, not to mention my way-too-small home.

But even when I think Lois has begun to feel sorry for me and gives me a bit of a break—like the cruise she sends me on in the latest book in the series—she still manages to throw in more dead bodies. She says it’s because she writes mysteries, not romances. I certainly wouldn’t mind starring in a romance for a change. Anyone know how I can get her to switch genres?
