When a local teacher is found dead, LA’s newest pet groomer Mimi Lee finds herself in a pawful predicament—with her younger sister’s livelihood on the line.

Mimi Lee is on top of the world. She has a thriving pet grooming business, the sweetest boyfriend, and a talking cat to boot. When she arrives at the elementary school where her sister Alice works, she’s expecting a fun girls’ night out—but instead finds a teacher slumped over in her car, dead.

Alice was the last one to see Helen Reed, which instantly marks her as the prime suspect. Unable to sit quietly and let the authorities walk all over her sister, Mimi starts snooping and talks to Helen’s closest contacts, including one jumpy principal, a two-faced fiancé, and three sketchy teachers. With the help of her sassy but savvy cat, Marshmallow, and a cute kitten named Nimbus, the clock’s ticking for Mimi to get to the bottom of yet another case before her sister gets schooled.

A word from Mimi Lee...

Hi, I’m Mimi Lee, and I live in Los Angeles. I’m very close to my family, who all reside in the area. My parents are older and enjoying the retired lifestyle. Dad spends his time on the golf course (maybe too much so) with his close buddy, trying to score below par. In Ma’s spare time, she tries to set up blind dates for my sister; Ma has even resorted to using her Malaysian Chinese community connections to scour for more prospects. Alice, my younger sister, a teacher at a nearby school, takes Ma’s awkward efforts in stride.

I’m the owner of a local pet grooming salon called Hollywoof. My shop’s motto is “where we treat your pets like stars.” I’ve themed my shop to match the name. Its décor features a spotlight, a flat-screen television which plays classic canine films, and even a special Bark of Fame floor decorated with golden stars inscribed with doggie celebrity names.

In my first year of running the shop, I’ve already had to trace some sick-looking Chihuahuas to an unscrupulous local dog breeder. I sure gave him a piece of my mind for his mistreatment of the puppies. Then the guy ended up dead—after someone had witnessed an earlier angry conversation between the two of us. After that, I got put on the suspects list by the police. To clear my name, I had to turn to my handsome lawyer neighbor, Josh, for help. Despite my initial flirting fail, we still managed to patch things up, and we’re officially a pair now. (Thank goodness for that, because Ma’s dating matches for me always turned out to be disastrous.)

I also asked my sassy talking cat, Marshmallow, to assist me during that first case. The fact that my Persian cat talks is wild. At first, I figured I must have been imagining things and super stressed from running the store to hear my cat talking to me. After solving our first mystery together, we’ve definitely bonded. I’ve gotten used to and sometimes even appreciate his snarky comments. Marshmallow first came to me by way of Alice. My younger sister had decided to give me a cat from the rescue shelter in celebration of my store’s grand opening since owning a pet grooming salon has been a lifelong dream of mine.

Speaking of my sister, I’m on my way to see her at the school where she works. We usually do a girls’ night out around Valentine’s Day as an annual tradition. I wonder if I’ll be meeting her new mysterious principal. Although I’d rather not. I’ve heard that he gets jumpy around folks. Or maybe I’ll spot some of her quirky fellow teachers.

Ah. I’ve gotten to the school now. I do see a colleague of Alice’s in the parking lot. Except this teacher isn’t walking around and won’t be talking to me anytime soon. Helen Reed is slumped over in her car, dead.
