It’s October in Cobble Cove, and Alicia is busy preparing for the library’s Halloween party when she learns that John’s aunt from Florida has died and that John’s cousins and their spouses are coming to town to bury their mother. The day after the funeral, the caretaker’s son is found dead by John’s grandfather’s gravestone, from a blow on the head. The only witness seems to be Sneaky the library cat, who, having left the library, turned up at Alicia’s door with blood and dirt on him.

As Alicia, Gilly, and Sheriff Ramsay investigate, a generation of family secrets is uncovered. Are one of the guests staying at the inn a killer? Will the humans solve the crime, and can Sneaky, Kittykai, and Salem, the inn’s guest cat, team up to help?

Opening the French doors that led to the enclosed patio, Alicia smiled when she saw Carol on the rocker moving back and forth with Kittykai on her lap. Johnny was holding and petting Salem on the lounge chair.

“Mommy, I got the black cat,” Johnny said.

“He’s Mr. and Mrs. Baxter’s cat,” Alicia told him and then realized that there were two couples with that name.

“Kittykai has a big purr,” Carol said stroking the calico under the chin.

“I’m glad you two are enjoying the cats, but you have to come inside now. Mrs. Ramsay is serving sandwiches.”

“Can Kittykai and Salem come, too?” Carol asked.

Remembering how Kittykai jumped up on the table the night before trying to get a piece of chicken, Alicia said, “I’m afraid not, honey. Leave the cats out here. The food is only for people. They have their own.” She glanced at the cat bowls against the wall. One was filled with water; the other, dry cat food.

Carol pouted but gently placed Kittykai on the ground as she rose from the rocker. Johnny dropped Salem from his lap a bit rougher, but the cat landed on all four of his paws.

After Alicia and her kids went inside, Kittykai said, “You stay where you are, Salem. I see what you did trying to charm that boy, but I know you’re up to something.”

“What do you have against me, Kittykai? It’s not my fault my humans brought me with them. I would’ve rather stayed home and enjoyed the peace. I’m the only cat there, so I’d have the place to myself. My lady spoils me. I’m so sick of her coddling. The guy isn’t too fond of me. I know I wouldn’t have had a home at all if it was up to him.”

Kittykai, who knew what it was like to be homeless, said, “Well, I chose my lady and her guy. They found me on a beach far away from here. Like you, I think the lady wanted me more than the man. She had a hard time getting me on the plane, but she flirted with a few important looking men, and here I am, an inn cat with a family and guests to entertain like your people.”

“They’re not all my people, Miss Kittykai. I’ve met the others before when they’ve visited, but I don’t care for them much. The only one besides my Suzie who even pets me is the poet guy. He even read a poem to me on the porch last night when everyone went home from the party.”

Kittykai found that interesting. “A guy who reads poems to cats? He must be a nice fella. My friend Sneaky says that his lady reads books to him that she writes. I wish someone would read to me.”

“You might find it boring, Kittykai. So, can we call a truce? I’m only here a few more days.”

Kittykai sighed, and it came out as a mew. “Very well but promise me that when my lady puts out the food, I get first dibs. Also, do me a favor and cover your litter clumps. I find them very disgusting. Lastly, leave your paws off my toys and tell me where you hid my catnip mousey.”

“Those are tough terms, Kittykai, but I agree. It’s only fair because you’re the resident cat. I brought your mouse in my room. I’ll try to show my lady where it is, and maybe she’ll give it to your lady.”
