The death of island playboy Curtis Marlin doesn’t register on busy caterer River Holloway’s radar…that is, until her brother and his girlfriend are arrested for the former athlete’s murder. Certain of the pair’s innocence, the amateur sleuth sets out to investigate. Suspicion on the island spreads like chocolate sauce when River questions the victim’s teammates. The suspects don’t appreciate her stirring up trouble, but she won’t let an election-hungry sheriff make her brother a sacrificial lamb.

But there’s more than murder on River’s to-do list. A missing groom, catered banquets, and River’s own wedding plans keep her hopping like a short order cook. And as the cherry on the sundae, she has a wild kitty to tame. Under mossy oaks and rustling palmettoes, fact and fiction blend in a mouthwatering romp of good eatin’ and yummy recipes. Spawning Suspicion is the second in Toussaint’s Seafood Capers Mystery Series.

Everything’s Changing

By River Holloway of Spawning Suspicion

Have you ever had the feeling that life is a river cresting at flood stage, and you’re being swept downstream all willy-nilly? Life is doing me that way right now.

My brother is accused of murder, so is my best friend, his girlfriend. The cops are certain they’ve got the right suspects as Doug and Viv had means, motive, and opportunity. They’re so wrong about Doug and Viv, and by golly I’ll show them.

That murder investigation is taking all my free time, and I’ve got weddings and special events on my catering calendar in the next few days. The bride of the wedding party gives new meaning to the term “Bridezilla.” I can’t let the investigation impact my means of making a living. Holloway Catering always gets the job done, and I must protect that reputation.

On top of that, Pete is house hunting for a place for us, and we need to set a wedding date. I hadn’t realized how much my family home doesn’t suit him until I started looking around at my grandparents’ furniture and all the old-fashioned everything. The only room besides the bedroom that contained any of my fiancé’s things was the dining room, which he used for his home office. The thought of leaving this house makes me hyperventilate, but we need more room. Both of us want children, there’s my commercial kitchen to consider, and Doug needs to have a room in our place, if I can clear his name.

The winds of change are blowing everywhere in my life. Customers keep asking me to add side avenues to my catering business. I could make cookies fulltime. The seafood market couple wants me to go into business with them and make big batches of my River Cakes, the crab cakes that everyone loves. Someone else suggested I make hot lunches and operate a fancy meal delivery service to island seniors. All these ideas could happen but they would change my business focus.

I can’t handle one more avenue of change right now.

So I’m focusing on my blessings. I am of sound mind and body. I am not the last of the Holloways because I have a brother, though he’s in serious trouble. Oh, and I have a special kitty named Major now. All of the changes in the air will sort themselves out in due time.

If I continue to keep grabbing at passing branches in the stream of life, I won’t go all the places I want and need to go. I’ve got to let go and trust that I can navigate these roiled waters. Not as easy to do as it is to say.

Thank goodness for ice cream. I could use two scoops of butter pecan ice cream right now. Do you have a favorite flavor of ice cream?
