Character Guest Post

Donna walked past me in the break room and said, “Don’t let love get you fired. No personal calls while you’re working.” She wasn’t talking to me, of course. She would never. She hates me. It was just something she said into the air, for everybody to hear but she meant me. I know that because she said it after I caught her looking at the picture on my phone’s lock screen.  It’s a picture of Randall. So what, right? The other women hanging around in there answered her. I didn’t say anything because, why should I? I mean, even if Donna was nice to me, it’s still none of her business. Right?

Anyway, I don't think I can be in love. No, that's not what I meant. I mean I don't think that I'm allowed. I don't think that I'm allowed to be in love. I know that doesn't sound right, does it? But that's what I mean. Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. I believe that somewhere before I was born it was decided that kind of thing was something that I can't have. To be in love, I mean. I think all of that is decided before you even get here. You know, before you're born. It's already been decided what you can have and what you can't have. How else can you explain what happens here in this world? That's the way I think it works. It’s how I see it, anyway.

I mean, don't get me wrong. There are things that I love. I love my house, right? And my new job, in spite of dealing with Donna’s attitude. Mr. Kinsey is super nice and Ray … Well, he’s just who he is. I can deal with him okay. My house and my job are pretty big and important. Those two things. Well, I'm still trying to figure them out. The truth is, I'm still trying to figure myself out, too. See what I mean? It’s that part right there that would make me wreck everything in a relationship. How could it be okay for someone give me that kind of love when I don't have the mind to keep it together? But that’s how it is for me … with people. And relationships.

Hmm, I guess there have been some people that I actually made me feel … I don’t know … important. Like Josh. And Myra. I guess you could call that love. But that's not what I'm talking about, is it? I mean the kind of love when you're “in love” right? When you're in love with someone special and they are your whole world. In love with someone so much and so hard and so deep that you think about them all day and you dream about them all night. Someone that you want to keep in your life … forever.  That kind of love. The “in love” kind. I don't think I’m allowed to have someone like that.

But if I could, it would be Randall.
