Dela Alvaro is a disable veteran who grew up on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation. When an IED in Iraq ended her military career, she came home to reassess her life and landed a job in security at the Indian run casino on the reservation.

Not even a year into being the assistant to the head of security, the head of security is found working with a human trafficking ring and Dela is promoted on a trial basis. When one of the casino employees is found stabbed and stuffed in a laundry chute, she knows she can kiss head of security good-bye if she doesn’t find the killer before the media gets hold of the story.

While she is in over her head, she can’t decide if the FBI Special Agent called in to help is a blessing or a curse. It’s a man she ran across in Iraq who overrode her authority. When a second casino employee is killed, Dela has to decide if she can trust the special agent with not only keeping her job but keeping the rest of the casino employees safe.

One Kind of Danger for Another

I’m Dela Alvara the interim Head of Security at the Spotted Pony Casino. This isn’t the job I’d planned on landing when I retired from the army but plans have a way of changing when you are fighting in a foreign land.

As an MP in the army, I was doing what I enjoyed most. Keeping order and putting people who broke the law behind bars. As part of the Military Police, it was also our duty to make sure paths in certain areas were clear before convoys rolled through. One day during such a mission we were hit by an IED. That day ended my aspirations of becoming an Oregon State Trooper or work for any other law enforcement organization.

The trauma from the attack and later the rehab to learn to balance and walk using a prosthetic leg took all of my attention. Two years after the altercation, I walked into my mom’s home on the Umatilla Indian Reservation wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life.

Three months later, I applied for the assistant to the head of security at the casino and was hired. I was happy to have a job a little like one I had dreamed of getting once I was out of the military.  But six months into the job, the head of security was arrested for aiding a human trafficking ring. That moved me up to interim Head of Security. The casino Board of Trustees are deciding whether to keep me at head or find a new person for the job.

Just as I’m getting the hang of the job and liking it, a casino accountant is found stabbed and shoved in a laundry chute. And now, my promotion could be yanked away if I don’t solve the murder and keep it as quiet as possible.

The Tribal Police are called to the scene and lucky me it is the detective that doesn’t believe I can solve how to open a jar of pickles that arrives. While passing barbs back and forth with him, FBI Special Agent Quinn Pierce from the Pendleton Field Office arrives to offer assistance. I’m not sure which is worse; the grumpy Tribal Detective or the Special Agent. Quinn and I have a history from Iraq. Mostly bad. But he seems to be interested in helping and not undermining me. However, I’m not about to let him know I’m not the same woman he knew before. I’m only a partial woman having had a lower leg blown off.

Trying to keep him from discovering this truth is as hard as trying to find the murderer among a list of many people the victim had been blackmailing.
