Life on Your Terms

How to Get What You Really Want

by Tanya Russell

Self-help

What a shame it would be to come to the end of your life and look back and say, "That was it?"

Life on Your Terms is a practical blueprint for how to feel fulfilled while creating the life you imagine. No matter what situation you find yourself in today, there is a bright future waiting for you. Applying the skills and practices in this book will launch you to that place and beyond, faster than you ever imagined possible.

In this practical guidebook, the author compresses decades of lessons learned from her wins and failures as a businesswoman and single mother into actionable steps to achieve the life you truly desire. Once bankrupt but now financially free, her courage, faith and strong desire for something more for herself and her children have driven her to seek out ways to create exactly that.

Don't live the same day every day and call it a life. Apply these foundational principles and rewrite your future today.

EXCERPT:

Forgiveness

An area that often prevents people from having a healthy mind is holding onto unforgiveness. This may be a delicate topic for some. There may be a person or two in your life you think you could never, ever forgive for how they wronged you. The situation, or what they did to you or a loved one, may seem unforgivable.

What you may not realize is that unforgiveness hurts you way more than it hurts the person who wronged you. If you have a particular situation in mind right now, do you honestly think that individual is lying in bed at night thinking about how badly they must have made you feel? Really? Because if that were the case, day after day for them, they would likely be sending you an apology text or writing you a letter asking for forgiveness. It’s more likely that they never think about you at all or have any idea that they even hurt you.

You are the one who still dwells on it and lets it get you down. I don’t mean to make you feel worse, but I want you to realize that what you are holding onto is not helping you. I have had numerous hurts in my lifetime. I know the anguish those hurts causes, but I also know the freedom that comes with forgiveness.

I am in no way suggesting that you have to make up with that person and be friends. What we often fail to realize is that forgiveness happens within one individual. In this case, you. Amends happen between two or more people. There is a HUGE difference between the two.

Forgiveness does not depend on you making amends. It’s an option but not required. To forgive, you must simply decide to do so. Nelson Mandela warns us that “unforgiveness is like drinking the poison yourself and expecting your enemy to die.” It’s time to let it go. Now let me be clear; when you forgive someone, you’re not saying that what happened was okay or acceptable. It is simply releasing the resentment or anger toward that person and freeing yourself from the continuous negative emotion. Don’t let your resentment hold you back and eat you up. It’s only hurting you.

I know this is way easier said than done. Sometimes it takes practice, and it may take days or weeks to really, truly be able to forgive. But I want you to start that process today. If there is something you need to let go of so that you can move forward, do it now. Don’t let one more day be wasted dwelling on it. Oprah Winfrey, who we all know has had some tremendous hurts, believes that forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different than it was. Perhaps her view of forgiveness helps you set aside your hope for a different past and look to a brighter future.
