That’s a lot of power to hold in your hands – the power over life and death - but pharmacists hold that power every single day. We are dedicated to keeping people safe, and work to help our clients live a better life with or without pharmaceutical help.
I’m a pharmacist, but there’s more to my life than work. I’m also a sister to Brock, sister-in-law to Violet (she was married to my late older brother), aunt to Will and Eva, cat-mom to Denver, a lover of all things kitschy, and a friend to many.
Let me back up a bit.

Name: Valetta Nibley; Spinster. (I always wanted to say that.)
Height: 5’8”
Age: NOYB… None Of Your Beeswax.
Weight: See ‘Age’.
Education: BA from University of Michigan, (Go Wolverines!) and then my Pharm. D. from U of M as well, one of the top ranked pharmacy schools in the country. Then residency at Lake Huron Medical Center in Port Huron.

Anyway, enough of that.
When I finished my residency I came back to my hometown of Queensville, Michigan, a sleepy town along the St. Clair River, south of Port Huron. I had gotten a job at a pharmacy in Wolverhampton, our neighboring town, but the pharmacist who owned and ran the pharmacy in the Queensville Emporium, our local get-it-all store, needed someone to sub for him while he was off after surgery. I took a chance and took the job.
When he recovered he decided that he wanted to semi retire, so he kept me on, and eventually handed the whole business over to me. I’ve since bought half the business – he still owns the other half – and run it on my own, though recently I’ve started taking on others to help so I don’t have to work so many hours.
Because real life is lived 24/7, not just during business hours. I bought a house, and have been fixing it up. A few years ago I started hanging around with Jaymie Leighton, little sister of my friend from school, Becca. Jaymie was just a baby when I was a teenager, and I used to babysit with Becca, something I loved doing. As the youngest in my family I never had younger siblings, so I thought (and still think) Becca was lucky to have Jaymie. Those two could not be more different; Jaymie loves vintage kitchen stuff, while Becca is more into antique china. Jaymie enjoys clutter, while Becca is a neat freak. I like them both, but Jaymie is the one I get along with best. We started going to auctions and thrift stores together.
I have to say… starting to hang out with her and her younger friends has made my life better. It’s fun. Jaymie has added to my life in other ways, too; I haven’t had a pet for a long time, but I adopted a cat that Jaymie, who was getting married, was worrying about, since she was going to be living in the country most of the time. Denver the Crabby Tabby, as Jaymie called him, is now the king of the roost, mellowing to become an Uncrabby Tabby.
I’ve also been helping my good friend figure out what’s going on with the recent spate of murders in our little town. It’s getting to be very Cabot Cove around here, and if you don’t know the reference watch my favorite old comfort show, Murder, She Wrote. Once in a while my pharmacological training is actually useful in Jaymie’s pursuit of killers. That makes an expensive degree well worth it, don’t you think? {{Sarcasm font}}
Recently there was even a murder closely connected to people I went to high school with. It’s weird when that happens… too close to home. I think I can help Jaymie this time by sorting out a few love affairs gone wrong from back in the old days, you know, among the bad boys and good girls of the school who inevitably get together. This time the mystery may go that far back, and if I can help Jaymie solve it, I will.
