A new feline cozy from the author of the award-winning Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries.

Septuagenarian Camelia Collins and her cat Blaze move to the Oregon Coast to fulfill a lifelong dream, but that dream becomes a nightmare when Camelia learns she has purchased a murder house. The former resident, reclusive businessman Jonathan Chamber, was brutally killed on the stoop, and the killer is still at large.

What’s more, Camelia discovers an ancient gravestone at the back of her garden belonging to a cat named Soji. Dead long ago, this seventh black kitten of a seventh black kitten now returns incorporeal form. Will Soji’s haunting help Camelia solve the murder mystery or send her screaming back to Portland?

HOW TO BAKE BREAD, by Greta and Rue White

The following is an excerpt from Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove:

‘The door opened and Greta stuck her head through. “Oh, you’re awake. Feel like a slice of toast?”

“Sure,” said Camelia. “Let me get cleaned up a bit, and I’ll join you.”

Ten minutes later, Camelia sat down at the table. She had changed into the baggy and oh-so-comfortable sundress she’d brought with her. Thankfully she had thought to pack a sweater as well, because the change of weather had carried with it a cold front that felt more like March than late June. The kitchen, warmed by the oven’s use, was an oasis of comfort after the cool of the back bedroom, and Camelia settled like a cat in a sunbeam.

Greta handed her a thick slice of lightly browned bread and placed a tray of toppings—butter, honey, and kiwi jam—nearby.

“Rue sweetie, we’re eating,” she called into the living room. “With or without you.”

Rue, bedecked in a smock-like apron, wasted no time joining them, and together they enjoyed the homespun treat.

Camelia was feeling warm and fuzzy, as if all were right with the world, which she knew was a bit warped, since in reality she had just found a bludgeoned man in her back yard and was now ensconced with one of the conspirators.

Alleged conspirators, she revised. She would never know why Greta had been talking to Ralf unless she asked.’

I remember that morning as if it was yesterday. I’d baked bread—I do it once or twice a week—but this time was different. Poor Camelia! What a night it had been for her, the attempted murder and all. Oh, they weren’t trying to murder her—it was someone else. But it happened in her garden, and the police don’t look kindly on such. They didn’t suspect her of course—they’d already taken someone into custody—but they insisted on going over the crime scene with a fine-tooth comb. Poor Camelia found herself booted out of her own house!

The woman had only been living in Love Cottage for a little while. She’d moved from the city, following some sort of dream. It seems like she should have been well past that by her age, but you must give her credit in the “it’s never too late” department.

I imagine she thought once she got herself and her pretty cat unpacked and settled in, the worst was behind her. She didn’t know she’d bought herself a murder house, you see. Or that the murders—attempted, at least—weren’t over.

We took pity on her, my wife Greta and I, and brought her up to our place to hang out while the police did their thing. But it was sad. She was so confused, she even thought Greta was in on the killings. That’s when I brought out the bread. No one can resist sitting down at the table with a nice slice of fresh baked bread.

My Grandmother’s Bread Recipe

2 cups warm water

1/2 cup white sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup vegetable oil

5-6 cups flour

In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water; stir in yeast. Allow to proof about 5 minutes until yeast makes a creamy foam.

Mix in salt and oil.

Mix in flour, one cup at a time.

Knead dough for 7 minutes. Make a ball and place in a well-oiled bowl, turning dough to coat. Cover bowl with a clean, damp cloth.

Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Knead for 1 minute and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place into two greased loaf pans. Allow to rise 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-40 minutes.

Cool before slicing.
