Setting: A seaside town at the New Jersey shore

A wedding with all the trimmings—and death as an unexpected guest…

Victoria Rienzi came home to the Jersey shore to research a new book and perfect her cooking skills at her family’s seaside restaurant, the Casa Lido. But when Vic’s exacting nonna puts her in charge of catering the soup course for a wedding at the exclusive Belmont Country Club, it’s not long before trouble is simmering in the kitchen. Three temperamental chefs are butting heads, their sous chefs are throwing punches, and the formidable club president, Elizabeth Merriman, antagonizes everyone around her.

Elizabeth, aka “The Iron Lady,” has made her share of enemies, including the father of the bride, who was caught embezzling from the country club. She threatens to fire the famous pastry chef in charge of the wedding cake, who doesn’t bother to hide her hatred of Elizabeth. And who is the mystery man in dark glasses, who never leaves the older woman’s side?

Though the wedding goes off without a hitch, by the time the happy couple and their guests depart, Elizabeth Merriman is missing. When her body is found on the beach the next morning, it appears that the country club president slipped from the top of the seawall, but Vic isn’t convinced. Did The Iron Lady finally push someone too far? And did that someone push her back—into the arms of death?

About Rosie Genova

Bestselling and award-winning author Rosie Genova left her heart at the shore, which serves as the setting for much of her work. The inspiration for her cozy series, the Italian Kitchen Mysteries, comes from her deep appreciation for Italian food, her affinity for the New Jersey seaside, and her love of classic mysteries from Nancy Drew to Miss Marple. A former journalist and teacher, Rosie also writes women’s fiction and suspense. The proud mama of three grown sons, she still lives in her favorite state with her husband and a charming mutt named Lucy.

Q&A With the Author

When did you first consider yourself to be a writer?

I have always been a scribbler. I used to steal my mother’s yellow memo pads and write (very bad) poems from the time I was around 8 years old. I kept journals in high school and college, and began by submitting poetry, stories, and essays. When my sons were young, I did freelance journalism, but I didn’t turn to full-length fiction until I was older.

What advice do you have for a new writer?

Nothin’ to do but do it. In order to really practice your craft, you have to create structure for yourself. Whether that means finding a corner of your house to write or an hour in the day that is sacred, that discipline is what will separate you from every other person who thinks, “Hey, I think I’ll write a book.” You’ve got to be willing to put the work in!

What is the easiest part of the writing process for you?

Oh, that one’s easy—writing dialogue. I’m an auditory learner, and yes, I hear voices in my head. How a character speaks is, to me, the most revealing thing about them. Often dialogue is the first thing I’ll get on the page. Plotting comes much harder for me.

What is your favorite part of this story?

While this story is mostly humorous, it has some serious elements, including a running theme about family. There’s a nice scene at the end between my main character, Victoria, and her brother, which I loved writing.

Which Character was the most fun to write about? Why?

I really have fun writing the male characters. I have a soft spot for Victoria’s dad, Frank, who’s a bit of a gambler and a Frank Sinatra fan whose style of dressing comes straight out of the 60s. He’s this carefree, optimistic person who always believes things will come right in the end—a guy who always bets on the long odds!

Which Character was the hardest to write about? Why?

In this particular book, I had to be thoughtful about how I presented the victim, an older lady who’s made a lot of enemies, but who also has a significant back story. I had to imagine certain experiences in her life that made her the way she was, and writing her was definitely a challenge.
