About Joann Keder
Joann Keder spent most of her years in the Midwest, growing up and raising a family on the Great Plains of Nebraska. She worked for sixteen years as a piano teacher before returning to school to receive a master’s degree in creative writing. A mid-life move to the Pacific Northwest lead her to re-examine her priorities. She now creates stories about life and relationships in small towns while her ever-patient husband encourages her on.
When did you first consider yourself to be a writer? I've always known I wanted to write, but never allowed myself that luxury. That's a great question, because it was a real turning point in my life. We moved across the country and I had these visions of finding a great job and starting a new adventure. That's how it works in the movies, right? Instead, I couldn't find work. People in the Northwest were very different from people in the Midwest. I broke my foot in a very complicated way and I was housebound for a year. With my husband's job taking him out of town frequently, I was alone and miserable. I sunk into a deep depression, some days sitting in my closet all day. "I'll come out when the weather's better," I'd say. Anyone who knows about the Pacific Northwest knows that can be months in the making. This went on for several years. One day while out hiking, my husband had a massive heart attack. He was life-flighted in to the hospital and his heart stopped six times on the way. As I sat beside his bed, listening to the beeping and whirring of the machines keeping him alive, it suddenly occurred to me: If I'm not going to write now, then when? During his recovery I wrote my first novel. I'm now finishing up my ninth novel and will continue until my fingers, mind or both give out. This is what I was put on this earth to accomplish. What advice do you have for a new writer? Start with tunnel vision. There are so many places to learn it can be overwhelming. Buy a highly-rated book or follow a good Facebook page and see if they are a good fit. My first experience with a writer's group was awful. They were pretty pretentious and I always left in tears. There are so many resources and people to help you, don't feel obligated to stick with one path. Beyond that, I would suggest giving yourself a certain amount of time to write. It doesn't have to be a lot. People sometimes don't start their novel because they believe it takes hours every day that they don't have. If you have fifteen minutes every day, then spend your first day writing a synopsis of your story. It make take weeks to finish and that's just fine. When that's done, start writing everything you know about your characters. I mean everything. What they eat, what they wear; you want to know them as well as you know your friends. From there start outlining your story. The big takeaway here is that there is no time limit. Your story will be finished when it's finished. And pat yourself on the back for accomplishing all that you have! What is the easiest part of the writing process for you? Editing, strangely enough. I love when the bones of the story are there and I can make changes and fill in detail. What is your favorite part of this story? I love the relationship between Lanie and her friends. A common thread throughout this series is family. It looks different to everyone and what it means to belong evolves throughout each book. Which Character was the most fun to write about? Why? November Bean! She's a hoot. She's unapologetically strange. She spent her childhood and early adulthood being forced to conform and now she marches to her own drum. (literally!) It's very freeing to write about someone who isn't locked into someone else's idea of normal. Which Character was the hardest to write about? Why? Lanie. That sounds odd since she's the main character, but I didn't feel like I knew her for many drafts. I wanted her to be disagreeable in the beginning, but come around as she goes through the story. We all have the capacity for growth. Whether we all use it is another story. I hope you'll see through her bluster to her good heart.Q&A With The Author
