Intent on getting their two mischievous dogs under control, Emory Martinez and her half sister, Vannie, join a group dog training program led by Shawn Parker. With a graduation certificate just within grasp and a party to celebrate their hard-won achievements, what could go wrong? For starters, their two dogs have decided to wreak havoc during the party and tempers flare. It turns out not everyone is pleased with the dog trainer and his mother, the condo association president. Whispers of the mother and son’s misbehavior, or worse, fly amongst the barks, whines, and growls of the canines.

Q&A With the Author

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I enjoyed getting to feature my own mini goldendoodle, Missy, and my granddaughters’ dog, Piper, as the set up for the murder. It was fun creating doggie antics that might frustrate a dog trainer. I also added in my own (unsuccessful) attempts at training my dog… fortunately, I have a good sense of humor so our lack of success is fodder for the books.

I also love dreaming up recipes to add into the scenes, then trying them out and sampling them. My taste testers are always happy when I start writing a new addition to the series since they are recipients of all the treats I make.

Do you have any other books you are working on that you can tell us about?

I write two other series. In addition to the cozy mystery Cupcake Catering Mystery series, I write the Aromatherapy Apothecary Mystery series. I’m working on edits for the second book in that series and the publisher is planning to release it by early to mid- 2023.

The third series I write is the Board Game Chronicles, which is a middle-grade fantasy adventure. The first book is completed, including the edits, and I’m waiting on a publication date. I’m currently writing the second book in that series (I have a contract for 4 books) but the writing has gone very slowly since it’s been a super busy summer for me. Now with school just starting back, I should have more time on my hands to concentrate on writing.

Can you tell us about what you have planned for the future?

Over spring break my granddaughter and I took a day trip up the coast of California and did some exploring for a new cozy mystery setting. I’ve got some great ideas percolating in my brain so once I’ve completed the book I’m writing on now, I’ll start figuring out some characters and a crime for them to solve. And I’ll definitely be writing a sixth book in the Cupcake Catering Mystery series sometime in 2023, but at this point I haven’t figured out any of the details yet.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing a suspense novel about 20 years ago then decided I had no idea what I was doing and took a writing course. Along the way I discovered writing for children’s magazines and having several articles published, put the novel aside. After numerous years and another writing course, I started on the novel again, which I published in 2017. Seven years ago, I started a culinary cozy mystery blog in which I feature a book and a recipe from that book. It inspired me to write my own culinary cozy mysteries and the first book, Sprinkles of Suspicion, published in 2020… and I found I was hooked on the genre!
