Donovan Evans is leaving the military after fifteen years and returning home to Victoria Island. He is ready to start the next chapter of his life with a different job and the hope for a new relationship. But old hurts frustrate his plan. And unforeseen violence transforms his priorities. Suddenly Emma and Donovan have more at stake than getting past their troubled history. They must work together to say alive.
Excerpt:
The next morning, raindrops splattered the windscreen. The automatic wipers increased in frequency as the clouds opened up. Donovan pulled into a parking space in front of the red brick courthouse on Main Street in downtown Victoria City. The stilldark shopfronts on either side were devoid of customers. The bells in the tower peeled loudly on the quarter hour. Emma hunched, her arms crossed over her stomach. He rubbed her shoulder gently. “Hey, it’s
okay if you changed your mind. No one will think less of you if you don’t want to see him.”
She swallowed, but the sour taste in her mouth didn’t go away. Exhaling, she sat back against the seat and uncrossed her arms. “Let’s do this.”
Donovan squeezed her hand. “It’s normal to dread this. You’re not alone. Every victim I’ve ever interviewed when I was a prosecutor had some sort of visceral reaction when they saw their attacker. I’ll be with you the whole time.”
“Thanks.” She reached for the truck door.
