Worlds of Fire: Metamorphosis

Worlds of Fire: Metamorphosis

by Deborah A. Bailey

GENRE:   Romantic Fantasy

On the Floating World when two Alchemists fall in love it can be...complicated.

Asira is a member of a high-ranking family of Alchemists who exert control over the libraries that store magical texts. Jaydon, an unconventional but powerful teacher of transmutation at the university, is from a gargoyle shifter group known as the Gigun.

Asira finds Jaydon frustrating and too fascinating for her own good. But she desperately needs his help when she becomes the target of a classmate's dangerous use of forbidden magic. With Jaydon's assistance, the two of them uncover a conspiracy that threatens the well-ordered world of the Alchemists.

Struggling with his growing attraction to her, Jaydon is called on to use his knowledge of the magical Books of Fire to determine Asira's fate. And depending on what secrets the books reveal, he may be forced to make a life-altering decision that will either bind them together… or permanently force them apart.

Jaydon picked up his stylus and shoved it behind his ear. Continuing to study her, his brows furrowed as though he was having an internal conversation. Thinking things over with himself and not sharing his conclusions with her.

Sure, she was used to intense stares from the magisters. They used them as an intimidation tactic. It was part of their mystery to be imperious and detached, to only associate with others on their level or from a specific Order. You were either in the Court hierarchy or you weren't. Even the most advanced students didn't have that kind of clout, no matter what Aurum family they belonged to.

"Are you sure you don't want to see my papers on the topic?" Sitting there while he watched her was unnerving. Not that he was bad to look at, because he wasn't. His features were finely sculpted, and his wavy shoulder-length black hair framed his face so that his almond-shaped eyes and full lips were accentuated.

He shook his head in response to her question, his gaze still fixed on her.

A noise outside caught her attention. There was chirping coming from the open sliding glass door that led to the balcony. Another perk of magister mentors. Private offices and balconies overlooking the spice gardens.

"Come in."

A small yellow bird flew in and perched on a shelf above one of the desks. It chirped and then turned its head to study her. Another chirp, then a turn of the head to the left and to the right.

"What do you think?" he asked.

"Nice bird."

"No, I was asking her."

"You were what?" She looked at him, then at the bird again, then at him. "Does she talk?"

"What does she say?" She would go along with it for now. She'd be done and then hopefully get picked by a mentor who was more serious and less messy.

Q&A With the Author

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

The book includes ideas that I'd been playing around with, but I was never sure how to put them into a book. What I enjoyed was the chance to expand on my ideas of a world based on magic and run by Alchemists. Since it's a portal world they have access to countless other worlds, and other beings who can travel through the portals. However, since all of my books have a central love story, I had a lot of fun with that as well. In their first meeting Jaydon and Asira seem like they'd have nothing in common, but of course they actually do. And their growing romance is at the center of the action.

Do you have any other books you are working on that you can tell us about?

Metamorphosis is book two of my Worlds of Fire series, however both books can be read independently. Currently I have a few WIPs that I'm working on. Including two additional books in the Worlds of Fire series about a cyborg soldier and a researcher on a planet of dragon shifters. But the next two books I'll be publishing are not in that series. One will be Family Pride: Love & Legacy, which will be book three of my lion shifter paranormal romance series. It includes the main characters, Mac and Zora who are mated members of the MacKinnon pride. And after that will be a short story tentatively titled, The Changeling and the Wolf King. I love writing and I'm really excited to get these books done and published.

Can you tell us about what you have planned for the future?

Right now I'm considering exploring other genres, such as Romantic Suspense and possibly Cozy Mystery! Fantasy and Sci-Fi are my favorites, though, so I don't know if I'll actually stray from that. But you never know. I'm a full-time tech writer in my day job and, as we know, day jobs take up a lot of time. So, I'm happy when I can get my books written and published. So, as far as the future goes, I'll just say that I love trying different things. And hopefully my readers will enjoy what I write as well.

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing since I was a child. I'd write little stories and show them to my mom. Over the years I took a lot of classes and went to writing conferences. Then, as a lot of writers do, I started writing fan fiction. For years I wrote Star Trek fan fiction and I learned a lot from other writers. Then, ultimately I decided to create my own characters and write short stories. Once I got my first story sold and published, I was so excited. That's when I realized that I could take this from a dream into a reality.

Anything more you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I'll just say thank you for appreciating my stories. Most readers I know (including myself) have a ton of books on their TBR list. I don't take it lightly when someone reads my work and when they let me know how they felt about it. Stories have the power to entertain and to teach. Human beings are wired for stories. Would I love to be a fulltime fiction author? Of course! But for now, I get the chance to write and publish and share my writing with so many wonderful readers. As far as I'm concerned, that's special.
