Read an Excerpt:

Every person applying for a marketing director position has the same hard skills. This makes soft skills the differentiating factor. As one marketing director shared, “Everyone wants the title and the responsibility, but are you good at growing people? At managing a team? At strategically getting things done?”

And the best way to develop such skills is by practical application and/or getting the advice of an experienced person. Good mentors will help you polish your soft skills in particular. They help identify gaps in your leadership skills and overcome them. That way, you do not become a “manager” or a “boss,” rather, you become a transformational leader.

Transformational leaders define a big vision and activate the people around them toward vision achievement. They serve as a facilitator, solving problems that the team cannot. They empower the team to do a lot of the front-line tasks while they stay at the helm and make sure that the boat is headed in the right direction. They connect big company goals to individual goals and ease the team’s path forward. They keep information flowing because that is the key to their, the teams’, and the organizations' success.

Teams with such leaders are eager to evolve and grow because they are united under a single banner and are willing to put in the time, effort, and energy to help the organization succeed. These leaders become excellent directors who lead the company to great success.

Q&A With the Authors

(Responses by Sumayyah, one of the co-authors)

  • What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I genuinely think that the most enjoyable part about writing this book was interviewing different marketing professionals.

We had a good idea of what we wanted to do and write about but speaking with different marketing directors gave us some fresh insights that really defined the finer details of the book. It helped us see what are the areas that potential marketing directors should prioritize.

Because at the end of the day, there’s no replacing the advice you get from people who’ve already been through what you’re going to do. So, that whole part was enjoyable and a tremendous learning experience.

  • Do you have any other books you are working on that you can tell us about?

Thank you for asking. We do have plans for another book in the future. This next one is going to cater to a broader audience, job seekers in general. And we were thinking about talking about what are some reasons why people aren’t getting promoted.

Folks who know that they’ve done good work or feel like “I’m doing everything right. So, why aren’t I getting promoted?” We want to talk to those professionals and help them see what mistakes they could be making or what factors they’re not taking into consideration.

  • Can you tell us about what you have planned for the future?

There are quite a few things in the pipeline but one project that I would love to talk about is careertuners.ai. We want to combine our services with AI and use the results to help students in underprivileged countries and universities elevate their job search strategies. Our goal right now is to reach 10,000 students in the global south using CT.ai by the end of 2023. We’ve got a team working on this and I’m very excited about it!

  • How long have you been writing?

I feel like I started writing in earnest around when I was 13 or 14. In school, I would love writing essays and whenever I had the chance to write a story for any assignment, I would do that. I just really loved to express myself in writing. And that grew over the years to writing more and more until this point where I can say, “I co-authored I book!”

  • Anything more you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I sincerely hope that this book inspires and motivates you to make the career moves you’ve been thinking about. There is no doubt in my mind that you’re more capable of achieving your goals. All you need is a little bit of guidance and help. And that’s what Resparking Creativity is there for.
