After finding long-lost family through a DNA test, Callie heads to Bobwhite Hollow, New Hampshire, to meet a great-uncle she never knew existed. Charmed by the village and more than half in love with her new family, she decides to stay and open a goat yoga studio and retreat space.

When retreat guest Angilene Claudson turns up dead with a wine glass shattered at her side and Callie’s favorite goat lapping up the spill, the death is written off as an accidental overdose. But when the goat gets sick, Callie’s gut tells her it wasn’t an accident at all. With her new business on the line and a possible murderer staying in the guesthouse, Callie sets to work to uncover the truth and keep her family safe.

Q&A With the Author

What was your inspiration for writing this book?

The goats in my own barnyard! Bugsy, on the cover, was inspired by the real-life Bugsy. He’s sadly gone to goat heaven now, but it’s so fun to keep him alive between the pages of the book. We had goats growing up, as well, and they have such fun personalities.

Cozy mysteries many times are light-hearted and fun, and I got to thinking how fun it would be to add in the silly antics of goats. How better to do that than with a goat yoga theme?

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Creating lovable characters that are fun to root for, and weaving in family history and secrets as a secondary mystery. It’s fun to explore various ways certain experiences and loyalties can change the dynamics of relationships. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters deeper as the layers of the story grew.

Do you have any other books you are working on that you can tell us about?

Yes! An Escape Goat is the first in the Zen Goat Mystery series. At this point I’m contracted for three books in the series, each coming out about a year apart. Book two is written and I’m starting on book three now.

I also write under the name of Paula Charles. My debut cozy mystery, Hammers and Homicide, came out in January. It is the first in the Hometown Hardware Mystery series and available wherever books are sold.

Can you tell us about what you have planned for the future?

Like I mentioned, I’m working on the third book in the Zen Goat series right now. Book two in both of my series are written and waiting on publication dates. Like most writers, there are ideas floating around in my head for other series. I just need to decide which one is yelling for attention the loudest!

Anything more you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thank you so much for giving a new writer a chance! The cozy mystery community, both readers and writers, have been so welcoming and supportive. It’s been an incredible perk that I didn’t know to expect and I want to express my gratitude to you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I hope you have a good time getting to know Callie and Bugsy. If nothing else, it should be fun!
