As Mel talked to his son and showed him a book, Liam took the time to glance around. This front section was the area she wanted to turn it into a reading nook area—a place where customers could take their book purchases and read. And with the giant picture window, what better advertising could you have than people reading and enjoying books.

He smiled when his gaze landed on her Christmas display with Santa’s boots sticking out of the chimney and the sleeping mouse under the Christmas tree. She certainly had some imagination. Of course, he already knew that since he’d been drawn into her plans for the bookshop’s refresh project.

The pieces of furniture she wanted for the area didn’t exactly have a traditional look. He was excited to work on the project because it would test his skills.

Tate let out a giggle. It filled Liam’s heart with hope that they’d get through this rough time and he would somehow figure out how to be the good parent his son deserved.

“Daddy, look!” Tate pointed to a bright, colorful picture of a reindeer.

He knelt down next to his son and pointed to the picture. “Who is that?”

“Rudy.”

Liam couldn’t help but smile. “Do you like Rudy?”

Tate’s head bobbed up and down.

“Why don’t you take it over to that table and look at it?” He didn’t have to say it twice as Tate made a beeline for the red and white children’s table that sat next to the wall. Liam turned to Mel. “Thanks for that. He loves the book.”

“It wasn’t hard. It’s the most popular book with the littles this year.”

“If you have a couple more like it, I’ll take those too.”

Mel’s brows briefly rose. “Christmas presents?”

He shook his head. “I’m starting him in daycare tomorrow. It’ll be another big change for him and I feel bad. I thought some new storybooks would cheer him up.”

She studied Liam for a moment. “I’m not sure that it’s your son that needs the cheering up.”

“What does that mean?”

Concern shone in her eyes. “You just look as though you have the weight of the world on your shoulders.”

He sighed. “It’s nothing.”

“Well, I’m here if you need a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen.”
